What A Difference A Day Makes
Leap Days come every 1,460 days; they must be important!
Unless your birthday is February 29, or you are a time keeper or a TV exec eagerly awaiting sweeps month
results, Leap Day probably doesn't mean that much to you. But it should. So maybe no cures to fatal diseases
were invented or no blockbuster movies were released on that extra day we get every 1,460 days. But plenty
of kind of important things took place. After all, without the following Leap Day events, where would Lois Lane,
the Lone Ranger, Bugs Bunny, Sadie Hawkins, and NASA be?

FEBRUARY 29 BIRTHDAYS:
JIMMY DORSEY, swing bandleader and musician, 1904
DENNIS FARINA, character actor/star of "Crime Story," born in 1944
PHYLLIS FRELICH, Tony-winning actress ("Children of a Lesser God"), 1944
ANN LEE, founder of Shakerism, 1736
JACK LOUSMA, astronaut, 1936
GIOACCHINO ANTONIO ROSSINI, opera composer ("The Barber of Seville," "William Tell Overture"), 1792
WILLI SMITH, fashion designer, 1948
SUPERMAN, comic, TV, and movie star and superhero, year unknown

LEAP DAYS IN HISTORY:
46 BC: Leap year is invented, under the auspices of Julius Caesar
1288: St. Bridget persuades St. Patrick to declare Bachelor Day -- on this 24 hours, every four years, women may propose to men
1690 (or thereabouts): Courts rule that the suspiciously regarded Leap Day is indeed a legitimate business day, ending years of idle days
1940: Oscars night in Hollywood, "Gone with the Wind" cleans up with eight awards
1960: Hugh Hefner opens the first swingin' sixties Playboy Club in Chicago
1984: Peter Morris, a Canadian marketing director, tries to launch International Underlings Day, a holiday for workers not honored on

Boss's or Secretary's Day
1988: Jay Stephens, the lawyer who went on to bust mayor Marion Barry for smoking crack, is appointed US Attorney for Washington, DC

EVENTS TODAY:
THE FEW, THE PROUD, THE LEAPERS: Domino's will award a free pizza on every Leap Day to 100 people born today, for the rest

of their lives. The pizzas will be awarded to the first 100 birth certificates sent to the pizza maker.

LEAP YEAR CAPITAL: Anthony, a hamlet of about 10,000 situated on the border of Texas and New Mexico, will sponsor its third
Leap Year celebration through the weekend. Started by Leap Day baby Mary Ann Brown, the event will feature everything from hot-air
balloons to square dancing to a softball tournament and is expected to attract 10,000 folks.
