Anthony,
Texas
(incorporated
in
1952)
is
situated
approximately
sixteen
miles
northwest
of
downtown
El
Paso
on
the
Texas-New
Mexico
border
in
El
Paso
County.
Located
at
31°60'N
106°35'W,
the
land
area
is
6.50
square
miles
(4,159
acres).
It
is
know
as
the
official
“Leap
Year
Capital”
of
the
world.
It
was
reportedly
named
by a
Mexican-American
woman
who
built
a
chapel
to
St.
Anthony
of
Padua
sometime
before
1884.
A
post
office
was
established
on
the
El
Paso
County
side
in
March
of
that
year
but
was
never
in
operation.
The
Texas
community
later
became
known
as
La
Tuna,
after
the
Federal
Correctional
Institution
located
there,
at
which
a
post
office
was
open
from
1932
to
1965.
The
economy
is
keyed
to
agriculture
and
to
La
Tuna
Federal
Correctional
Institution.
The
economy
primarily
depends
on
the
agricultural
trade
in
the
area,
the
employment
generated
by
the
businesses
in
El
Paso,
Texas
and
Las
Cruces,
New
Mexico.
The
current
population
of
Anthony
is
estimated
at
3,850
people.
This
includes
approximately
1,300
inmates
and
97
prison
employees
living
on
the
campus
of
La
Tuna
Federal
Correctional
Institution,
which
is
located
nearby.
By
the
year
2010,
the
population
is
expected
to
grow
to
5000.
